A successful photoshoot doesn’t start when the camera comes out—it starts well before. Whether you’re shooting content for social media, a campaign, or a brand refresh, preparation makes the difference between images that simply look good and content that actually works.
First non-negotiable: clarity of purpose. Before anything else, you need to know what the shoot is for. Is it filling gaps in your content calendar? Supporting a launch? Refreshing your visuals? Having a clear goal shapes every decision that follows, from styling to framing.
Next, shot lists are essential. Inspiration boards are great, but a practical shot list keeps things focused and efficient. We always plan for a mix of wide shots, close-ups, movement, and negative space—especially for social media, where flexibility matters.
Brand alignment is another must. Colours, textures, props, and locations should all reflect your brand’s tone and personality. A beautiful photo that doesn’t feel “like you” won’t perform as well as something more understated but aligned.
Outfits and props should be finalised ahead of time. This sounds obvious, but last-minute decisions slow everything down. Steaming clothes, prepping backups, and coordinating colours saves time—and stress—on the day.
Lighting is a quiet hero. Natural light is often best, but knowing where and when it will hit your space is key. If you’re indoors, test the light beforehand. If you’re outdoors, have a plan B.
Finally, plan for usability. Leave space for text overlays, crop for different platforms, and think about how each image will live online. A good photoshoot doesn’t just look good—it works hard across your content.
Preparation isn’t about overcomplicating things. It’s about setting yourself up to create content that feels effortless, aligned, and ready to use long after the shoot wraps.
